When to use it
Use after measuring the actual walls or ceilings to be boarded and selecting the exact board dimensions required by the chosen system.
How it works
Sheet area = sheet length × sheet width. Required sheets = net boarding area ÷ sheet area, then the allowance is applied once and the result is rounded up to a whole sheet using precision-safe exact-boundary handling.
Worked example
Assume 28 m² of measured boarding area, 2.4 m × 1.2 m sheets and a 10% cutting allowance. One sheet covers 2.88 m²; 28 ÷ 2.88 = 9.722 sheets; 9.722 × 1.10 = 10.694, so order 11 whole sheets before checking the drawing and supplier pack or delivery arrangements.
Measurement guidance
Net boarding area in square metres, sheet length and width in metres, and a separate cutting allowance percentage.
Buying and specification checks
This is an area-based quantity estimate. It does not optimise a cutting layout or specify board type, thickness, edge, layers, support centres, fixings, joint treatment, fire, moisture, acoustic or structural performance. Those choices must come from the applicable tested system and current manufacturer instructions.
Choose the system and draw the sheet layout before ordering
A whole-sheet count is a quantity starting point. The board specification, support, fixing, jointing and safe handling method remain separate project decisions.
- Measure each wall and ceiling separately, label openings and returns, and record the exact board size. Sketch sheet orientation, joints and unavoidable cuts against the support layout specified for the chosen system.
- Confirm board type, thickness, edge, number of layers, fixings, joint treatment and any fire, moisture or acoustic requirement from the applicable manufacturer system and competent design information. Do not select a board by face area alone.
- Plan delivery, a dry protected storage area and clear handling routes before ordering. Boards are large and awkward; HSE guidance highlights restricted access, heavy specialist boards and overhead work as manual-handling risks, so assess the task and use suitable handling or positioning equipment.
- Check cutting waste against the actual layout, then round to the supplier's sale quantity. Keep sheet count separate from accessories, trims, fixings, jointing materials and any support or framing quantities.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring awkward cuts
- Choosing board type by size alone
- Treating quantity as fire or moisture specification
FREE TOOL AND PROJECT PACK
What the free calculator provides
The free calculator converts a measured surface area and selected sheet size into a whole-sheet quantity with an editable allowance. It does not specify or validate the lining system.
What the dedicated pack adds
For a room or wider home renovation, the Renovation Control Pack adds coordination and project records around this quantity estimate.
- Baseline, scope, measurement and existing-building controls.
- Quote, dependency, procurement, delivery and payment records.
- Change, site-checkpoint, completion and future-reference controls.

Practical FAQs
Can area alone confirm the plasterboard layout?
No. Draw the sheets, joints, openings and specified support positions. The calculator counts sheet area but does not optimise cuts or validate a manufacturer system.
Which board type or thickness should I choose?
Use the board and complete lining system specified for the location and required performance. Moisture, fire, acoustic, impact and other requirements cannot be chosen from the quantity result.
How should plasterboard be stored and handled?
Follow the manufacturer's current storage instructions and keep boards protected before use. Assess access, board weight and repeated lifting; use suitable handling aids and positioning equipment where required, especially for overhead work.
Does the sheet count include fixings, jointing materials or supports?
No. It covers whole sheets only. Take fixings, tape, compound, beads, framing and supports from the selected system and the actual layout, then order them in their own sale increments.
